Ratings

The Films, Videos and Publications Act requires all films for public exhibition to be classified. 

There are ten standard classifications which may sometimes have a cautionary note attached. The cautionary note gives important advice about the content of the film regarding offensive language, violence etc. 

Please note that for all Restricted films, suitable proof of age will be required to purchase tickets. A drivers license, passport or Photo ID which displays a DOB is considered acceptable.


Underage people are not exempt from age restrictions even if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

In accordance with Section 8 of the Films, Videos and Publications Classification Act 1993, these films are considered exempt from classification, and therefore do not have any specific age restriction attached. Viewer discretion is still advised however, and care should be taken to ensure the content of the film is appropriate for the intended audience.  

G

 

These films are for general viewing. However, G does not conclusively mean a children’s film because many of these productions contain content that would be of no interest to children.

PG

 

These films contain material that a parent might need to explain to younger children.

The content is mild.

M

 

These films contain material that requires a mature perspective.

This means that there is a special restriction. Refer to the words on the right of the label for the full conditions.

Restricted to audiences of 13 years or over unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. A guardian is considered to be a responsible adult (18 years and over), for example, a family member or teacher who can provide guidance. It is illegal to show the film to people below the age shown on the label.
